The Word I
"In the beginning was the Word" (John 1:1). This foundational course teaches the double nature of God's Word, written and revealed, and how to make it the foundation of your whole Christian life.
The double nature of the Word of God
The course opens with a foundational distinction every Christian should know.
The logos, or written word (Joshua 1:8): the Scriptures themselves. Knowing the Word of God is a command. The course has you study great biblical models of students of Scripture: Ezra, a scribe skilled in the Law of Moses, who had set his heart to study, practice, and teach (Ezra 7:10); Nehemiah; and the Bereans, who searched the Scriptures daily (Acts 17:11).
The rhema, or revealed word (Matthew 4:4): the part of Scripture that the Holy Spirit illuminates and makes alive for your situation. "The entrance of Your words gives light" (Psalm 119:130).
The living word is the combination of both. The course warns against two imbalances: those who stop at logos, because the letter kills but the Spirit gives life, and those who seek only revelations with no scriptural foundation. Every revelation must be justified by the Scriptures.
The importance of the Word
The second part establishes what the Word produces in the believer: it is our foundation, it produces spiritual growth, and it produces life.
What you will discover in this course
- The difference between logos and rhema, and why both are needed
- Biblical examples of people skilled in the Scriptures
- How to study and meditate on the Word of God effectively
- How to discern a true revelation from a false one: the test of Scripture
"Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." — Matthew 4:4
