Ministry of Helps

Being called by God to His service

The course begins with a principle: God has placed some in the Church (1 Corinthians 12:27-28). It is God who appoints ministry gifts, not people (Ephesians 4:11). And only those who are faithful are chosen by God (2 Timothy 2:2).

What is the ministry of helps?

"Helps" comes from the Greek antilepsis: support, assistance, relief, the one who brings help. The course laments that churches often recognize only two or three gifts among them and are wounded as a result: not enough faithful workers, poor stewardship, and works that stumble.

Two striking images illustrate this ministry: helps are like lifelines when a storm arises at sea, what God wraps around us to hold us together in hard moments, and like the wall blocks between a house's foundation and its roof.

Biblical examples

The course walks through the great models: Joshua, Aaron and Hur supporting Moses (Exodus 17:8-12). When Moses' hands went down, Israel lost the battle; when Aaron and Hur supported them, Israel won. No man of God can exercise his functions properly without helps. You will also study the New Testament deacons and "those who show mercy" (Romans 12:7-8).
