The Character of God
"Can you search out the deep things of God?" (Job 11:7). This course is a wonder-filled study of the character of God: how He has revealed Himself, and what His attributes mean for the one who seeks Him.
How has God revealed Himself?
The course begins with the source of all knowledge of God: His revelation. God makes Himself known in two ways: general revelation in nature and history (Psalm 19:1-6; Romans 1:18-20), and special revelation in Jesus Christ and in the Bible (John 1:18; John 14:9). Whoever has seen Jesus has seen the Father.
The attributes of God
The heart of the course is a systematic study of God's attributes, with a rich set of biblical references.
His omniscience: God knows everything: the past, the present, and the future. He knows the stars by name (Psalm 147:4), the thoughts and hearts of people (Psalm 139), their burdens and desires (Exodus 3:7). And His foreknowledge is not causative: future actions do not happen because they are seen; they are seen because they will happen.
His omnipresence: God fills the whole universe and is present everywhere at the same time, all the fullness of God in every place. The course carefully distinguishes this truth from pantheism.
His omnipotence, His holiness, His love, His faithfulness: all are facets of a God who is infinitely great and infinitely near.
What you will discover in this course
- The two modes of God's revelation: general and special
- The non-moral attributes of God: omniscience, omnipresence, omnipotence
