Preaching and Teaching Techniques

A message can be biblical and still touch no one. This homiletics course teaches the art of preaching and teaching the Word of God in a living, clear, and applicable way.

Counsel for effective preaching

The course is highly practical. From the first lesson, it gives the principles of a message that bears fruit:

  • Awaken interest from the introduction: it must tell the audience why this message matters to them
  • Do not assume people know what you know: take time to provide basic, meaningful, and interesting explanations
  • Read Scripture with meaning: not like a machine gun, but as one savors a good meal, enjoying each bite
  • Make the message practical: how has what you are preaching helped you personally? Give examples and illustrations
  • Avoid being technical and complex: do not treat your church like a seminary class
  • Develop a conversational style carried by authentic personal conviction

From preparation to delivery

Beyond these counsels, the course covers the full process: choosing a subject under the direction of the Holy Spirit, structuring the message, preparing application, and delivering with the anointing. Technique without the Spirit is sterile, but the Spirit gladly uses a prepared vessel.

What you will discover in this course

  • How to build an introduction that captures attention
  • The art of illustration and practical application
  • Public reading of Scripture that gives meaning to the text
  • The difference between preaching and teaching, and when to do each
  • The role of personal conviction and anointing in communication

"Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching." — 2 Timothy 4:2

A course paired with practice

At CFBK, this course is accompanied by practical preaching and teaching exercises. Students put into practice what they learn and receive constructive feedback, because one learns to preach by preaching.

Who is this course for?

For all who communicate the Word: preachers, Sunday school teachers, house-cell leaders, and every Christian called to communicate the Gospel clearly, even if only to family, colleagues, or friends. Every child of God has a message to communicate; this course teaches how to do it with excellence.
