Faith II

"Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1). This advanced course sharpens your understanding of faith until you can distinguish true faith from its most subtle imitation.

Faith is a substance

The course takes the definition of Hebrews 11:1 and unfolds it: faith is a substance, the evidence and proof of the invisible. A strong image illustrates it: faith is a title deed. Just as a deed proves your right to a house, faith is your ownership right over what God has promised.

Faith or mental assent?

This is the most striking section of the course. John Wesley said the devil gave the Church a substitute for faith that resembles it so closely that few people know the difference: mental assent.

  • Mental assent says, "I know the Word is true, but..."
  • Faith says, "If the Word says it, then it is so. I have it now."

Faith is always present tense; hope is future tense. It is not hoping, wanting, or wishing that produces results. It is believing.

Faith: a walk and a power

The course then connects faith to fellowship: faith is a walk with God, and little fellowship equals little faith. Finally, faith is a creative power that comes from the heart. The head reasons; the heart acts.

What you will discover in this course

  • Faith as substance, evidence, and title deed
  • The practical test: am I in faith or in mental assent?
  • Why faith speaks in the present and hope in the future
  • How to receive and develop faith: a gift from God, nourished by the Word
  • The direct link between fellowship with God and the level of faith

"Jesus said, 'All things are possible to him who believes.'" — Mark 9:23

Who is this course for?

For students who have laid the foundations with Foundations of Faith I, and for every Christian who has "believed" for years without seeing results. This course identifies precisely where faith is lost and how to recover it. Faith that obtains is not the privilege of a few famous men of God; it belongs to every child of God.
