Discipleship II

So, you want to be a disciple of Jesus? This second-year course asks the question directly, then leads the student onto the least traveled and most fruitful path: humility.

The conditions for becoming a disciple

The course first reviews what a disciple is (Luke 6:40) and why the world needs disciples: men and women who "turn the world upside down" (Acts 17:6). Then it lists the conditions Jesus Himself gave: rejection of the flesh and carrying the cross (Luke 9:23), renunciation, leaving everything (Luke 14:33), and steadfastness: abiding in His word (John 8:31).

The proof that someone is a disciple? Fruit (John 15:8) and love (John 13:34-35): "By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."

Humility: the greatest attribute of the disciple

The heart of the course is striking. It teaches that the first duty and greatest virtue of a human being, the one from which all others come, is humility: recognizing, as in Matthew 5:3, the poverty of spirit that opens the Kingdom. Opposite it stand the danger, misery, and deceitfulness of pride (Luke 18:10-14, the Pharisee and the tax collector).

The crucifixion of the flesh

Humility leads to the cross: the condition of true fellowship with God (Isaiah 57:15; 66:2, "on this one will I look: on him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, and who trembles at My word"). The course finally contemplates humility in the life of Jesus (Philippians 2:5-8): His example toward people and His dependence on the Father (John 5:19,30).

What you will discover in this course

  • The non-negotiable conditions for being a disciple of Jesus
  • Why humility is the origin of all virtues
  • The crucifixion of the flesh: what it is and how it happens
  • The humility of Jesus as the disciple's model

"If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me." — Luke 9:23

Who is this course for?

For those who understand that ministry without character is a ticking time bomb, but not only for future ministers: humility and carrying the cross are the path of every disciple of Jesus, whatever their place in the Body of Christ. This course is for every child of God who chooses to let God shape who they are before what they do.
