How to Function in the Local and Universal Church

Definition and nature of the Church

The course first lays the foundations: the Church, ekklesia, the "called-out ones," is called from darkness to light (Acts 26:17-18), a body with many parts (1 Corinthians 12:12-27), an assembly of believers. You will study the distinction and complementarity between the local church and the universal Church.

Its nature is described through rich images (Matthew 16:13-18): a King and His Kingdom, a living organism, a family, an army.

The function of the Church

Why does the Church exist? The course lists its functions: to manifest the praise and glory of God, to be light and salt in this world, an agent of reconciliation for all people, an embassy of heaven on earth, a demonstration of God's love and power, and the establishment of divine reign on earth.

Gifts, functions, and ministries

The most practical part articulates three realities: the gifts of the Holy Spirit for every believer's ministry, and the ministry gifts, apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, teachers, for equipping the saints for the work of service. You will learn how these gifts are exercised concretely in the local church, under authority, and in the universal Church.
