What is holiness?

The course defines holiness precisely: separation to God, being like God in character, word, thought, actions, and conduct conformed to His nature. The only thing that distinguishes us from people without Christ is the divine nature we possess (2 Peter 1:3-4): the children of God have their Father's nature (John 1:12).

Three statements structure this definition:

• Holiness is a way of life: it is who you are
• Holiness is a divine requirement for the believer's conduct
• Holiness is an attribute of Jehovah God Himself

To be holy is to be consecrated, set apart for sacred use, and to stay away from sin and evil.

The call to separation

The course develops the call of 2 Corinthians 6: "Come out from among them and be separate," from pagan influences as well as from false brothers (1 Corinthians 5). Then it addresses the central tool of sanctification: the renewing of the mind (Romans 12:2), distinguishing the natural person, the carnal person, and the spiritual person (1 Corinthians 2-3).

Four essential factors

The teaching ends with four factors to consider when speaking about holiness, beginning with the human heart (Mark 7; Ezekiel 36:25-27: "I will give you a new heart"), because outward holiness without inward transformation is only religiosity.

The call "Be holy, for I am holy" is addressed to every child of God. Holiness is the privilege of all disciples of Jesus, not of one category of servants.
